The 2024 SASSA grant increases that will be implemented next month are almost here, ending the long wait. For those who depend on the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) to sustain themselves, October holds great significance as the 2024 SASSA grant increases become effective. Nevertheless, not all government grants will see improvements, and the amount has left some individuals dissatisfied.
SASSA Grants to See Significant Boost Starting October
Beneficiaries receiving SASSA grants can expect an increment in their payments within the next month. The following are the specifics:
- Old-Age Grants (aged 60 to 74): Beneficiaries will be given R2,190, R10 more than the previous month. This amounts to a R100, representing a 4.8% increase over the entire year.
- Old-Age Grants (aged 75 and older): The grants for beneficiaries will be raised to R2,210, with an increase of R10, rounding up to R100 and a 4.8% increase for the year.
- Disability Grant: This grant goes up by a further R10 to R2,190.
- Child Care Dependency Grant: This grant, which is basically a form of support for disabled children, has been raised by R10 to R2,190.
- War Veterans Grant: This grant also sees an R10 increase to R2,190.

Grants That Do Not Increase
Unfortunately, not all of Mzansi’s more than 20 million grant beneficiaries will see an increase in October 2024. The following government stipends remain unchanged from their previous increase in April 2024:
- SASSA Child Support: Unchanged at R530.
- Child Support Top Up: Unchanged at R250.
- SASSA Foster Care: Unchanged at R1,180.
- SASSA SRD (Social Relief of Distress): Unchanged at R370.
The upcoming raise will occur in April 2025, and the agency has not communicated the amount. Based on previous years, it’s unlikely to exceed a 5% increase, which could mean approximately R100 or R110 throughout 2025. A decision on the discontinuation of SASSA SRD grants scheduled for the end of March 2025 still needs to be made.
How to Apply for Assistance
If you are in one of the situations mentioned above and do not have any financial support, you have the option to request aid by visiting the SASSA service portal and scheduling an in-person appointment. It’s important to note that the processing of applications can take up to three months. Nevertheless, if your application is approved, you will receive retroactive payments from the date of your application.
Some grants require you to undergo asset and means tests, meaning you must demonstrate your monthly income. If your income exceeds a certain threshold, you may not qualify for government assistance. To obtain more specific information, enter the grant you are interested in into the search bar on the SASSA website.
