This young quartet specializes in all things acoustic: fiddles, ukuleles, accordions, upright basses.
What you might not glean from their name, however, is that these guys tackle the traditions with the gusto of a group of rabble-rousing punks. It’s grit meets grace, Colorado-style.
Old school but never old, Boulder Acoustic Society is the new wave of American roots music. B.A.S. is the result of four songwriters getting together to mash up blues, folk, gospel, rock and world music. Whether it’s a festival stage, performing arts center, bar or a late night campground set, B.A.S. delivers musical diversity throughout their incendiary live shows.
Boulder Acoustic Society’s unique lineup of violin, accordion, bass and percussion supports sharp vocal hooks and powerful grooves. The energy that these four bring to a stage also carries over to their new release, The Caged Bird. The disc features B.A.S. and some very special and unexpected guests, including Bill Frisell and Ginger Baker band alumnus, trumpeter Ron Miles. The Caged Bird also showcases the depth of the songwriting of this band that wears vintage clothes, savors small batch bourbon, rocks the ukulele and scored all the original music for hot, new ESPN.com series, Mayne Street, which stars popular ESPN host Kenny Mayne.
One by one, Boulder Acoustic Society is:
Scott Aller: percussion, vocals
Scott left behind his drum kit to play a wooden box, a washboard and scrap metal with B.A.S. He's also a music business visionary who holds the band together with his unique drum style. The mohawk makes him look tough, but he's a softie.
Aaron Keim: bass, ukulele, banjo, vocals
Aaron collects obscure folk songs and builds his own instruments. He plays Appalachian music on the banjo, ragtime on the ukulele and blues on steel guitar. And, oh yeah, he slaps the bass like it owes him money.
Scott McCormick: accordion, ukulele, piano, guitar, vocals
Scott found music in the gospel churches and the punk clubs of Chicago. He plays modern jazz on the piano, gritty folk punk on the guitar and he sings in Gaelic too. He is also our photographer and graphic designer.
Kailin Yong: violin, ukulele, vocals
Kailin is from Singapore via Vienna, New York, San Francisco and Denver. He ventured beyond the classical world to play music for world peace. He can play a Bach partita, rock a Brazilian Choro, sing in Mandarin Chinese and play in ¼ tone scales. He remembers everyone's name. Test him!
